About this project

The mosque on Ras Ghurab Island required a building management system, and Almafor delivered the supply, installation, testing and commissioning as a specialist subcontractor.

A mosque has an unusual load profile. The building is close to empty for most of the day and fills within a few minutes, five times over, every day. Cooling a space with that pattern on a fixed schedule is either wasteful for most of the day or inadequate at exactly the moment it matters, which makes it a control problem before it is an energy problem.

Scope covered the direct digital control equipment, the thermostats and the associated cable works. The plant has to respond to occupancy and to outside conditions rather than to a timer, and somebody has to be able to see whether it did.

The other characteristic of a building like this is that it cannot be taken out of service. There is no shutdown window for a mosque, so the control work is arranged around the building's use rather than the other way round.
