About this project

Under project UG-1316, phase two of the ADWEA enterprise GIS upgrade, Almafor surveyed the communications infrastructure across the utility's stations and reconciled what was recorded against what was actually installed.

The survey covered 45 power stations and 31 water stations. For each one the as built communications record was checked against site condition, and the tabular as built data was corrected to match.

This is the least visible work we do and among the most useful. Every drawing on infrastructure of any age describes an intention from the year it was produced. The copper, the ducts and the fibre describe what was actually built, and the two drift apart with every modification made quickly and recorded later. A network extended several times by several contractors eventually contains routes nobody can account for.

The value of a survey like this sits entirely in the differences it finds. Those differences are what let the next project be scoped accurately instead of discovering the discrepancy after the trench is open, and they are why we run the same exercise at the start of a station upgrade before any design work begins.
