Where the Altivar family fits in our work

The Altivar ATV320 is Schneider Electric's machine-duty variable speed drive, and it is the drive we install most: duty and standby pairs on irrigation and stormwater pumps across Abu Dhabi's parks and municipal stations, typically in the low tens of kilowatts, mounted in motor control centres we build in our own Mussafah workshop. Around it sit the family members the archive of our delivered projects also names, the ATV310 and ATV212, and larger drives where a station's pumps demand them.

What decides whether a drive installation is any good is mostly not the drive. It is the sizing against the real duty, the incomer protection and earth-leakage arrangement, how the drive's own protection talks to the pump manufacturer's modules, the changeover logic between duty and standby, and whether the panel keeps the electronics within temperature in a UAE plant room. That is panel engineering, and it is the part we own end to end.

The drives sit inside a documented delivery record: twelve duty-and-standby pump sets across four park programmes, the Shakhbout City pump rooms on ATV320 pairs, the Al Ain parks programme, and stormwater and irrigation stations where drive, PLC, RTU and instrumentation arrive as one tested panel.

Drive panels, built and tested

MCCs with the drive, incomer protection, earth leakage, metering, changeover and control logic assembled and factory tested in Mussafah, so site work is installation and commissioning rather than fabrication.

Sizing against the real duty

Motor rating, cable lengths, switching frequency and the actual hydraulic duty, not catalogue optimism. On duty and standby pairs, sized so either drive carries the station alone.

Pump protection integration

The drive's protection and the pump manufacturer's own modules each see part of the truth. We wire and configure them to act as one scheme, so the station reports why it stopped rather than just that it stopped.

Replacement of ageing drives

Swapping obsolete or failed drives inside existing panels, including reworking control wiring and parameters so the new drive behaves like the station expects, part of our wider PLC and drive replacement work.

Harmonics and the bigger drives

Commissioning with the controls

The drive is commissioned with the PLC, RTU and instrumentation as one system: ramps, interlocks, changeover and the telemetry the municipal SCADA expects, proven end to end before handover.

What to check on a drive panel

  • The real duty cycle and hydraulics, because a drive sized from the motor plate alone is a guess
  • Duty and standby philosophy: automatic changeover, and each drive able to carry the station alone
  • How drive protection and pump protection modules divide their responsibilities, and where that is documented
  • Enclosure thermal design for UAE ambient, especially outdoor GRP positions
  • Bypass arrangements where the process cannot wait for a replacement drive
  • Spares strategy: one drive family across many stations is worth real money at three in the morning
  • Parameter records at handover, so the next engineer configures a replacement in minutes, not a day
  • Whether the panel was factory tested as a whole, or first assembled at site

What is the Altivar ATV320 used for?

It is a machine-duty variable speed drive, and in our work it runs pumps: duty and standby irrigation and stormwater pump pairs in the low tens of kilowatts across Abu Dhabi's parks and municipal stations. It sits in a motor control centre with the protection, changeover and control logic around it, which is where most of the engineering actually lives.

Can you replace an old or failed drive in an existing panel?

Yes, and it is routine work for us: physical fit, control wiring rework and parameter configuration so the new drive behaves the way the station and its SCADA expect. Where the old drive is obsolete, we advise on the closest current member of the family and what changes around it.

Do you supply the drive alone, or the whole panel?

The whole panel is our normal scope: drive, incomer and earth leakage protection, metering, changeover, PLC and instrumentation interfaces, assembled and factory tested in our Mussafah workshop. A drive dropped into a poorly engineered panel inherits every one of that panel's problems.

When is a low harmonic drive necessary?
