Platform
Most of the municipal pump stations we have automated in Abu Dhabi run on the same controller: Schneider Electric's Modicon M340. That is not brand loyalty. It is what the approved manufacturer lists ask for, what the operations teams know, and what we can program, panel, test and hand over with the fewest surprises.
The platform
The Modicon M340 is Schneider Electric's mid-range PLC: a rack, a power supply, a processor and a row of I/O and communications cards chosen per station. It sits in the gap that municipal pumping actually occupies, bigger than a compact controller can serve honestly, smaller than a process plant that would justify an M580 or a DCS. One platform then repeats across dozens of stations, which is exactly what an operations team maintaining a whole emirate of parks wants.
We have built M340 systems into duty and standby pump stations across Abu Dhabi and Al Ain: Shakhbout City's park pump rooms, the twelve pump sets across Al Falah, Mohammed Bin Zayed City, Al Fou'ah and Rabadan, the Al Ain parks programme at Al Qua'a, Al Khabeesi, Al Jahili, Al Mitrid and Muwaiji, and stormwater and reservoir stations besides. The pattern is stable: an MCC with Altivar drives, an M340 with a local HMI for control, and telemetry to the municipal SCADA over DNP3.
This page sets out the modules we actually build with, part number by part number, and the questions that matter when you are specifying a new M340 station, inheriting a running one, or deciding whether an ageing one should be migrated. Panels are assembled and factory tested in our own Mussafah workshop before they reach site.
The build
BMXP342020 processors on BMXXBP0400, 0600, 0800 or 1200 racks, sized by the station's I/O count, with the BMXCPS3020 power supply. Where a panel stands in an outdoor GRP enclosure we specify the hardened H variants, rated for the extended temperatures an Abu Dhabi summer actually delivers.
BMXDDI and BMXDDO discrete cards for pump commands, run and trip feedback, floats and switches; BMXAMI and BMXAMO analogue cards for the level, pressure and flow transmitters. The card mix is engineered per station from the instrument schedule, then repeated across the programme so spares interchange between sites.
The module that turns an M340 into a reporting RTU, speaking DNP3 and the IEC 60870 family to a municipal SCADA. It is also the module whose configuration lives in two places at once, which is why we documented a real timestamp fault and its fix rather than pretending the platform has no sharp edges.
Altivar ATV320 drives on duty and standby pump pairs, TeSys contactors, Compact NSX breakers, and the metering on the incomer. The M340 is one component of a motor control centre we design and build as a whole, not a card sold on its own.
Applications written in EcoStruxure Control Expert against the client's own tag naming, alarm priorities and duty changeover philosophy, so twelve stations behave as one system rather than twelve dialects. Backups, as-built documentation and the NOR export handed over with the panel.
Scale changes the answer. The energy management upgrade we delivered for ADDC runs on the M580, the platform's bigger sibling, and a substation control room is a different discipline entirely. Part of knowing a platform well is knowing where it stops.

Common questions
Yes, in EcoStruxure Control Expert, and it is most of what our pump station work runs on. We write new applications, modify running ones, and take over stations where the original integrator is gone, starting by recovering a verified backup of what is actually in the processor.
Yes, and it is common. The first questions are always the same: is there a current application backup, does the BMXNOR0200H export match the program, and does the documentation match the panel. We put those right first, because every later change depends on them.
Through the BMXNOR0200H communications module, which speaks DNP3 and the IEC 60870 family. The stations we deliver for the Department of Municipalities and Transport report over DNP3, with the point list agreed against the municipal system before programming starts.
The installed base across Abu Dhabi is large and the platform is mature, which cuts both ways: parts, spares and people who know it are easy to find, and the sensible horizon depends on your station's age and criticality rather than a blanket rule. Where scale or lifecycle argues for it, the migration path is the M580, which we have delivered. We would rather assess a specific station than recite a policy.
The whole panel. Enclosure, breakers, drives, contactors, the M340 rack, terminals and labelling are assembled and factory tested as one build in our Mussafah workshop, so what arrives at site is a finished assembly checked against its drawings.
We build our station programmes on a deliberately repeated card list, which means the spares that matter, processors, power supplies and the common I/O cards, interchange across sites. For support contracts we agree the spares holding per client rather than promising a generic shelf.
